I have chosen to install and compile software for that very reason Sasha. Normally a sys admin would install user packages once, as root, to make the packages available globally to all other users, which is how I chose to do it.
So I cannot really comment on installing packages as a 'normal' user. I have had problems going down this route before, which is why I do things as root user most of the time. I know it's not the recommended way, but if I was working as Linux sys admin, then I would have to work as root user, so I thought I may as well get some practice on my own machine first.
