I dont blame you, maybe the developers think that 64bit is going to go away?
I think you might find you are far from alone these days.
Though I did wonder why PHP had so much trouble compiling on one of the most common flavours of Linux ever used. Makes me wonder whats going on in the disjointed PHP thinktank!
Glad I only compiled it (eventually) for others to use, and don't use it myself. :)
