If I put index.php and try to view localhost from mozilla I am getting
nothing displayed on the screen..

I am installing Apache and PHP again (I need to make this work with php)

You mention that you have called the file index.html. Have you 
configured Apache/IIS to have html files?  What happens if you change 
its name to index.php?
