Oh man! I would laugh but this is a sad situation...

I am finding that filtering From addresses that have
'auautoresponder' and 'auto-responder' is helping a
bit.

I don't want to refrain from sending mail to the list,
or unsubscribe as this is one of those lists where I
am trying to "give back", but that is exactly what I
have been doing - e-mailing help individually, which
means the rest of the group gets no benefit from my
advice. Not that my advice is that great, but I'm
here to help!

Would the real list administrator Please Stand Up?

This sucks.

What makes it really bad is that this is the result of
people coming here for help, and then carelessly
ruining it for everybody else! You are scum!

Short of using some kind of fabled "secure e-mail",
perhaps one should only be able to post to this list
if a certain ASCII key is in the subject line. It
wouldn't ever have to change or be secret, why would
an auto-responder ever use it?

It could be made well-known that if you don't include
the string XXXXXKJH in the subject line of your mail
to any lists.php.net address, the mail server just
tosses it into the bit-bucket where it belongs!

I haven't sat here and thought out all of the
raramifications of such a scheme, but I imagine it
wouldn't be hard to implement, and there is no reason
why someone would ever desire to build it into their
majordomo, so it wouldn't ever have to change.

Anybody else care to comment on that idea?
