Did you create all directories that are needed by qmail? Is your qmail binary statically linked or, if not, are all the libraries available in the chroot? Maybe its easier with a simpler SMTP program like smtpclient <http://www.engelschall.com/sw/smtpclient/> or ssmtp <ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/s/ssmtp/>. Regards... Michael
