Installing sed 4.0 from SFW did the trick. Since the system's sed is in /usr/bin, I chose the low road and mv'd it to sed.old. If it breaks anything, I'll make a symlink to the new version in /usr/local/bin. The PHP compile and installation was successful, now I'm just running into problems with Horde and its applications.
