Thanks! that worked but it needed the following modification:
./configure --with-oci8 --enable-sigchild

Well, at least I got a successful install. Now I'll see if I can connect to a database!

You might try
./configure --with-oci8

drop the home directory if you're using php-4.3.0RC2
it seems it comes bundled with supporet for oci8
