Further searching seems to indicate this is a problem with OpenSSL not PHP and will be fixed in later versions of OpenSSL . What puzzles me is that I have compiled this before with PHP4.2.1 and openssl 0.9.6 - both earlier than I'm trying with now.
If there is any light anyone can shed on this it'd be good.
