As far as I can tell, many more people are having the exact same problem--see latest posts on this list as well-- and unfortunately, there seems to be no answer as of yet as to why. Perhaps we need to wait for PHP 4.2.2? I don't know. Until then, PHP works by itself, if I do not install it for Apache. Apache works but has no PHP support.
