Shaun If apache is already installed that's okay. The important thing is to carefully read the information in the 'INSTALL' file where you unpacked PHP - particularly the bit about 'DSO' and testing whether your installation of the web server supports this. If all is okay then you can start your build (of PHP) from step number 9 below. BTW the notes comment on using mysql as well so have a look at that while you're at it...

You can even include .html, and .php3 can be added for backwards compatibility. The path on the right hand side of the LoadModule statement must point to the path of the PHP module on your system.
