Well, somehow you are confused about that, because the only way to get the error message you got was for the HAVE_SENDMAIL or whatever the symbol was in that version in the config.h file to not be defined and this symbol is set by the configure script. But regardless, upgrade to 4.1. The mechanism is different now.
