Thanks to all the e-mails regarding this. Looks like RH7.2 (possibly other version as well) put the mysql.sock file in /var/lib/mysql rather than /tmp/
You can edit your php.ini file to look for the mysql.sock file elsewhere. Again thanks to all!!
