After banging my head against the wall for several more days, I
succeeded in compiling PHP4 with a different Apache version.
I was able to compile PHP with Apache version 1.3.20 using the options
below. It seems there is some incompatibility with 1.2b8 that isn't
mentioned anywhere.
There was another post on this list some months back. Someone else
had the same error, with a different solution. Theirs was to comment
out a line in some of the C code that referred to ap_auth_type in
the php code. They didn't say which Apache version they were using.
