I suggest you try FreeBSD (www.freebsd.org). It's not Linux, but it is a
free Unix, and in my experience it tends to outperform Linux, especially in
low-memory situations. I actually managed to get Apache/PHP/MySQL to
*compile* on a 486 with 8 MB RAM. (it took a couple of days of compiling,
but it completed). Now that was PHP3, and MySQL 3.22, and I know the later
versions of each require more memory, but it should still be possible with
16 MB RAM. Just don't try to run an X desktop at the same time. Also
remember that MySQL has a --with-low-memory compile option.
