So the conclusion for the OP is simple:

If the host is allowing you to use FTP to upload your site then they are a 
bunch of clueless hypocrites.

Again, you're giving more credit than is due. I've read their arguments again 
and it seems quite clear (to me at least) that they do not understand the 
difference between running an FTP server and an FTP client.
