I fixed my problem.

For archive purposes (as of PHP 4.3.0), to install mcrypt support you only need to install libmcrypt. No need for mcrypt, or mhash ... forget anything else you might read.

The installation problem I had was indeed a bug in PHP which I am happy to say is fixed in the latest CVS STABLE snapshot.
