I my self is in the same situation I've started of with a great book http://www.essential-series.com/essential_php.htm which should give you some idea how to begin and the other one i bought which i am still waiting is "Building a Database-Driven Web Site Using PHP and MySql" by Kevin Yank. with these two books you should get head started in CMS.
