Dunno much about your code (I haven't taken the time to really read it), but you could be missing pics.php under NS if the server will hand that up as a default index name (or if you have an index.php as a copy). That is, http://www.xyz.com/ might be a perfectly valid link to your script. Meanwhile, you're right that PHP_SELF (in either form) is a server-side variable and the browser won't ever see it.
