An interesting suggestion. I have a "set and forget" data api which handles all these transformations in the background. So it is probably a year since I looked at a serialized string. Which meant that when I introduced a bug that sometimes double-serialized the string, I was at a loss about how to diagnose the problem. I will take your suggestion and become more familiar with the guts of the serialized string.
