You can have both...a standalone executable and an Apache module! They will operate on the same server, independently of each other.

If this is in reference to not running it as a module of Apache, then my set up must be weird, because I can run my PHP as a Script from the Command line yet it was installed as a Module of Apache and this is explicitly stated when I fire up Apache...
