Will getcwd() work for you? Also, try phpinfo() to find out which variables are set.

I need to get the current directory, but it must have long filenames and not be chopped to xxx~1 or anything. $SCRIPT_FILENAME is not set, there is no pwd utility, nothing is set in the environment and realpath('./') returns cropped firectory names. Is there a way to do this or am I condemned to bang my head against a wall and swear some more?
