eregi() is the go... whilst the documentation is pretty thin on the actual
expressions, '^' checks for the pattern at the begining of a string.

if(eregi('^324', $string)) {
    // 
    // it did begin with "324"
    //
} else {
    //
    // it didn't
    //
}
