Yes, you have to be connected while someone looks at your site. A webserver on a modem would be terribly slow, but possible if you just want to expiriment. If you want to start 'quickly' without too much RTFM, find out what webservers are good and have an installer package for your platform/distribution, sometimes these are even pre-compiled. bvr.
