It's not a browser thing...

<br /> is the correct syntax for a line break in XHTML. All tags must be 
closed, hence the / and the white space is necessary to separate the 
element name from its closure.

All major browsers will recognise <br> but if you want to be XHTML 
compliant, <br /> should be used.
