Read the INSTALL file for freetype. 2.0.4 says: make setup make make install Then install PHP with the options you need in ./configure. You'll get better bang for your buck searching the archives for cobalt-users and posting there. After all, *everyone* on that list runs Cobalt servers whereas probably only a small percentage do on the PHP list.
