Valentin, first, let us know exactly how you tested. second, i think it may have to do with the way the direct extension is written. the direct extension does batch fetches every time it does a physical read of the database. if all you're trying to get is a value from the first row in a multi-row result set, then it makes sense that this would be slower than a driver that does only single row fetches.
