I've recently installed:
Red Hat Linux release 7.1 (Seawolf), PHP 4.0.6 Apache, 1.3.20 DSO from
scratch with no problems.
also:
Red Hat Linux release 6.1 (Cartman), PHP 4.0.6 Apache, 1.3.20 DSO from
scratch with no problems.

Just so you know it can work.
