Instead of using numbers, I use this system:

chmod a+rwx
(all users read/write/execute)

chmod u+rwx
(owner of file read/write/execute)

chmod g+rwx
(group read/write/execute)

chmod o+rwx
(all users read/write/execute)

The plus + can be substituted with a minus - to remove specific
permissions, and any combination of r, w, and x can exist in there.
