Which matches the documentation:

    Returns < 0 if str1 is less than str2; > 0 if str1 is greater than str2,
and 0 if they are equal.

I think the point here is that the documentation says the function returns a number greater than zero, or less than zero, or zero.

It's just that many who have responded on this list show that the function commonly returns -1, 1, and 0.

It's wise to keep with the documentation.
