Alternatively you can pass the var through htmlspecialchars...

 echo htmlspecialchars( $response );


and for a really simple solution you can echo it inside a textarea...

 echo "<textarea> $response </textarea>";


Though you'll likely want to increase the size of the textarea!  ;-)
