What you installed are development (source) files needed to build PHP modules. $ apt-cache show php5-dev Version: 5.2.4-2ubuntu5.6 Description: Files for PHP5 module development This package provides the files from the PHP5 source needed for compiling additional modules. AFAIK you're out of luck on Ubuntu for releases newer than 5.2.4 at the moment.
