there are many php related files. yumex or yum don't seem to be alternatives since there are many files that may or may not require updating...which one
yum remove php-5.2.6
yum install php-5.2.8
5.2.8 may not be in the repositories yet
so rpm seems to be an alternative with a remove - reinstall
