I must agree with Dan's approach. I've messed with Frontier, ASP, Java and PHP using this approach and it works for me. I always find that books just miss out on that vital topic I need to work on. Set up a small project (I'd recommend something database related) and look for sample scripts in the manual and elsewhere.
