I agree that the best way would be to parse the http header response. However, If you want to check it out quickly and only do a couple of them, do this:
http://www.whois.sc/google.com or http://www.whois.sc/cnn.com One of the surprising features of this whois site is that it will also tell you how many websites are on that server.
