Yeah, actually, you were right. I must have misunderstood the instructions - probably because of the press for time, reading too quickly. I wasn't using "--with-jpeg-dir", etc. Sorry for the mess, and thanks for all the help. At least some good came out of this -- I now have a working Slackware installation (after the headaches, I decided to install Slackware 10 on my unused server and compile everything from source to see if I could get it to work). Thanks for your time everybody.
