Thats odd.  You might need to debug the configure script to find
out exactly where the script is erroring out.

Using something like
  echo 'we are here'; exit

Half way between the 'host system' check and the 'gcc check' then
increasing or decreasing another 50% depending on if you get the
error or not.  That should narrow the bug down rather quickly
since, not too much goes on between the two checks.
