I seriously doubt that. As I said, it's valid markup, and I'm not aware of any major browser that mishandles it. Even IE gets it right. As a test, have you tried replacing it with whatever you think is better? I bet it won't change the layout at all. You're probably looking in the wrong place... Hope that helps.
