Untested pseudo-PHP follows -

        $encountered_elements = array();
        foreach($original_array as $key => $val)
                if(in_array($val, $encountered_elements)) {
                        unset($original_array[$key]);
                } else {
                        $encountered_elements[$key] = $val;
                }
