I may have missed the latest developments, but I thought that Unisys was still trying to collect licensing fees for the use of the encryption part of the LZW algorithm. I noticed however that GIMP in Mandrake 9.0 can generate .gif files, so I'm not sure. By the way, I would expect PHP to be able to read .gif files but not write them. You'd have to use .png instead.
