Remember that your clients would have to install the java application on their computer, because java applets (the one running from web) don't have permission to access files on local computer. The same limitation has javascript. I have heard about a signed ActiveX component that can do this, I think it is that signed components are enabled (or must be confirmed) by default in IE.
