use chmod 775 dir (or 777 - but not recommended)

I have problem uploading the file to a directory...
It says permission denied. THe problem is taht ther
directory is on the web.
I connect using WS_ftp.
THe directory is set to:
drwxr-xr-x
How do I make it writable..?
I am using form to upload the files there..
Is there any way I can make the directory writable..?
