Please try using this CVS snapshot:

  http://snaps.php.net/php4-STABLE-latest.tar.gz

For Windows:

  http://snaps.php.net/win32/php4-win32-STABLE-latest.zip

non of the dlls in the c:\php\dlls\ directory exists in win\system32 or
win\system so there is nothing to overwrite - it is always using the
dlls in c:\php\dlls.

is there any other file(s) i have to overwrite? i never had to do this
when installing php, and i can't find anything about this (besides the
above dlls) in install.txt in the snapshot zip file.

And did you replace all files in your system or system32 directory ?

yes i renamed c:\php to something else, and unzipped the snapshot into
a new c:\php, then rebooted - still crashing as described above.

Please make sure you've really replaced ALL the old
dlls with the new ones from the snapshot package!
Especially the php4ts.dll file. Easiest way to make
sure you do this is to delete all the old files first.

And sometimes a reboot is needed too..(reported by others)
