Dear all, This term at the Verstehen Colloquium we will be reading Ernst Cassirer’s 1942 book The Logic of the Humanities (Kulturwissenschaften). We will meet through Zoom every Thursday at 10am, starting next Thursday 4 February with part 1 of chapter 1. (See the full schedule of readings at the end of this email or on our webpage: https://www.phil.cam.ac.uk/seminars-phil/verstehen-colloquium.) Some background on Cassirer can be found here (see esp. sections 4 and 5): https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/cassirer/. In his approach to the relationship between nature and culture, knowledge in the sciences and the humanities, understanding human beings, objectivity, the fact-value relationship, the role of concepts in enquiry, and other topics, Cassirer offers an interesting possible middle route in philosophy. Heir to the Marburg school of neo-Kantianism, he engaged with, but also posed interesting contrasts to, phenomenological thinkers like Dilthey, Husserl and Heidegger on the one hand, and on the other hand the analytical philosophy of the Vienna Circle as well as the Baden neo-Kantians who influenced Weber and thereby much contemporary social science. Through his work in the philosophy of culture and of the humanities, he is especially interested in the question of how the concrete individual can be grasped in a universally valid way. To be added to the mailing list and for access to the text and invitations to the Zoom meetings, please contact Sen at sb2276. We hope to see you there!
