Dear all,

The next meeting of the Serious Metaphysics Group will take place tomorrow,
Wednesday, January 27th at 4.30-6pm on Zoom (details below). Jessica Leech
(KCL) will present a paper entitled 'Relative Necessity Redefended'.

Abstract
We often distinguish between relative necessity and absolute necessity, e.g.,
it is perhaps necessary that nothing can travel faster than light, relative to
the laws of physics, but perhaps absolutely necessary that everything is
self-identical. Hale and Leech (2017) proposed a new formulation of relative
necessity that avoided some problems of the standard formulation. Recently
Roberts (2020) has raised a serious problem for the proposal of Hale and Leech,
and proposes his own alternative. In this talk, I will review the problem, and
propose my own preferred solution, with a brief comparison to Roberts's. In
short: the philosophical notions I want to capture are different to mere
restrictions on accessibility relations. (This talk is based on joint work with
Carlo Nicolai - all mistakes should be attributed to me.)
