Dear all, The next meeting of the Serious Metaphysics Group will take place tomorrow, October 28th at 4.30-6pm on Zoom (details below). Mat Simpson (Cambridge) will present a paper entitled 'Universal generalisations and belief causation'.
Abstract An orthodox theory says that beliefs in universal generalisations like 'all grizzly bears are dangerous' are best understood as beliefs in distinctive propositions which contain general concepts like all. In this talk I argue that at least one version of this theory faces a serious problem explaining why our beliefs in such generalisations cause beliefs in their instances, like 'this grizzly is dangerous'. I argue that this points us towards a different understanding of beliefs in universal generalisations.
