Dear Jessie and Tom,

I hope that this email finds you well.

I am a MPhil in International Relations and Politics at POLIS and particularly
interested in attending the first session titled 'Beliefs, Signal and Groups'.
Accordingly, I was wondering whether I may be able to participate, and if so,
whether there were any preparatory paper to read beforehand.

Many thanks in advance.

Subject: [CamPhilEvents] Mental Sciences: Lent term programme

Dear all,

the first Lent meeting of the mental sciences group will be next
Wednesday afternoon, the 22nd of January, from 3-4:30 p.m in the board
room in the philosophy department.

Dan Williams will be leading a discussion on some new work in progress
titled “Beliefs, Signals and Groups”

Abstract: I clarify and defend the following hypothesis: in the
political domain, certain beliefs function as signals of group
membership and loyalty. Drawing on signalling theory and various
characteristics of human psychology and coalitions, I develop a
theoretical framework for understanding this phenomenon and I try to
show how it can be distinguished from other well-known causal pathways
(e.g. filter bubbles, echo chambers, groupthink, etc.) through which
group membership can lead to inaccurate beliefs.

We will have 3 other sessions this term, all at the same time and place.
Preliminary details are below. All are welcome and we look forward to
seeing you there!

5th February: Erlend Owesen (HPS) “The Meta-Problem and Eliminativism
about Phenomenal Consciousness”

19th February: Karina Vold (HPS) TBD

5th March: Katharina Zuhlsdorff (Psychology) “what can we learn about
the neural basis of drug addiction from computation modeling?”

Best wishes,

Jessie and Tom
