Dear all:
As per subject line, this reading group will be in:
HPS department, Free School Lane: Board Room , first
floor, Tuesdays 4.30 till 6.00 weekly: starting thus Tues 15 October at 4.30.
Bryan Roberts, Matt Farr and I have arranged the theme will be: The Arrow
of Time. But:
(i) this is subject to people's interests: which we will ascertain at
first meeting (followed by pub!);
(ii) we plan that we will skip 29 Oct and 5 Nov so that we can all attend the
first and third of
ELLIOTT SOBER's Tarner lectures: occurrng in Trinity College on:
29 and 30 Oct, 5 and 6 November.
The arrow of time is indeed a broad theme! But as an appetizer, here is a
philosophical classic about the more metaphysical aspects of the
theme: Williams' ''Myth of Passage'' 1951. Every philosopher should have a
copy, even if in the whirlygig of Cambridge term, you dont get round to
reading it by next Tuesday at 4.30.
But rest assured we are very open about topics. Eg we could do the history
of Boltzmann's attempts to prove the H-theorem...a little genuine physics
in that darned arrow!...or cosmic expansion... if people would like...next
Tuesday will thus be free-wheeling discussion, tho it may include an
exposition of Williams...
best, Jeremy B, Matt Farr and Bryan Roberts
