Dear colleagues,
It is a pleasure to announce that this year, Trinity College's Tarner
Lectures will be given by Professor Elliott Sober (University of
Wisconsin). (go to: http://sober.philosophy.wisc.edu)
The Lectures are entitled:
Solving Problems in the Philosophy of Science
by using (some simple ideas about) Probability
The Lectures will be on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, in the late afternoons, in
two successive weeks in the middle of term: as follows:
1. Tuesday 29 October, at 5.00 pm: The Problem of Induction
2. Wednesday 30 October, at 5.00 pm: Ockham's Razor
3. Tuesday 5 November, at 4.00 pm: Realism, Empiricism, and Instrumentalism
4. Wednesday 6 November, at 5.00 pm: Values in Science
The venue for all the Lectures is the Winstanley Lecture Theatre, Trinity
College: (approached from Whewell's Court, opposite the cobbles at Great
Gate, Trinity Street)
Please note the early start, at 4.00 pm, for the third lecture.
