Moral Change

Dynamics, Normativity, and Metaphors

Workshop hosted by the Department of Social Anthropology, University of
Cambridge, UK

The 15th of May 2019, Venue: Trinity College Junior Parlour

Change is one of the most striking features of moral frameworks, and it has
challenged thinkers for thousands of years. In the fields of anthropology,
philosophy and jurisprudence especially two aspects of moral change are in
focus in contemporary thinking. The first is the dynamics creating and leading
to moral changes. They are often investigated with the aim of explaining these
changes and the hope of enabling us to create future moral progress. The second
is the various issues of normativity arising from moral change. This can entail
discussions of the possibility of moral critique, moral evaluation and moral
progress. However, moral change as such has remained under-theorized. An
important task for future research is thus to discuss which metaphors and
conceptualizations are apt for understanding the phenomena. Our hope is that
attention to moral changes in the rich contexts of actual life combined with
interdisciplinary theoretical discussions of the nature of moral change will
prove a fruitful way forward.

The workshop Moral Change provides a venue for discussions of all aspects of
moral change and thinkers from anthropology, philosophy and jurisprudence will
present their research.
