It has been bought to my attention that there was some confusion about where the event was being held. To clarify this is the Board Room at the Prisons Research Centre at the Institute of Criminology; NOT the Philosophy Board Room.
The reception on the ground floor should be able to direct you to the board room. PRC seminar on ‘Philosophy in prison’ Wednesday the 27th of February from 14-15.30 The PRC will be visited by MM McCabe, Mike Coxhead, Andy West and Kirstine Szifris who will talk to us on the topic of 'Philosophy in Prison'. The seminar is on Wednesday, the 27th of February from 14.00-15.30 in the Boardroom, and everyone is very welcome! - Mike Coxhead is a Visiting Research Fellow at the Department of Philosophy, Kings College London. He’s been teaching philosophy in Belmarsh for several years. Mike will discuss the relevance of prison-based philosophical discussion to academic philosophy. He will focus specifically on how philosophical discussion in prison should inform contemporary theories of epistemic and educational value, with a focus on contemporary virtue epistemologies. - Andy West is a philosophy teacher with The Philosophy Foundation who has, along with Mike, delivered Philosophy to a range of people in Belmarsh. He has personal experience of being a prison visitor as a young person and contact with the CJS through family members being imprisoned. Andy’s talk will focus on the experience of returning to the prison environment as a Philosophy teacher. He will discuss the lived experience of the philosophy teacher and the way in which these conversations have effected is personal self-reflections. - Kirstine Szifris is a research associate at the Policy Evaluation and Research Unit, MMU. She is also a former PhD student at the PRC and, under the supervision of Alison Liebling, completed her PhD in Spring 2018 entitled ‘Philosophy in prisons: An exploration of personal development’. Her talk will focus on the role of philosophical dialogue in the lives of prisoners. She will discuss the relevance of this type of educational experience to the lived experience of imprisonment and the potential impact it can have on identity. - MM McCabe is a Professor of Ancient Philosophy Emerita, King’s College London and has set up a charity supporting the teaching of Philosophy in Prison, which she will talk about.
